Coniston Water Watersports

Coniston Boating Centre, on Lake Road a few minutes from the centre of Coniston, is run by the Lake District National Park Authority as a not-for-profit attraction rather than a private operator, and it is the main way to get onto Coniston Water without your own boat. It hires out motor boats, rowing boats, single and two-seater sit-on-top kayaks, canoes and paddleboards, on the same lake associated with Donald Campbell’s water speed record attempts and with Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons. The centre warns that its car park gets very busy, asks hirers to arrive with time to spare before a booking, and points to more parking in the village.

Kayak hire is sold in blocks of up to two hours and includes the boat, paddle, buoyancy aid and a brief instruction before you go. Booking is online only, and the centre recommends booking ahead to be sure of a boat; single and double kayaks are booked separately. The single kayak has a minimum age of 16, while the double takes under-16s who are accompanied by an adult. Hire can be cancelled for the day in high winds, the centre publishes its own opening hours, and its cafe covers the wait either side of a session.

The lake is long and often calm, sheltered by the fells on both sides, which makes it a reasonably forgiving stretch of water for less experienced paddlers compared with more exposed lakes further north. There is no current beyond wind-driven chop, and the shoreline gives plenty of places to land if conditions change.

This suits anyone wanting an easy, low-commitment couple of hours on the water to break up a walking-heavy week, and families with older children capable of managing their own kayak or paddleboard. Complete beginners hoping for a fully guided introduction should look elsewhere, since hire here is self-directed after a brief safety briefing rather than a taught session; anyone who would rather stay on dry ground has Tarn Hows, a few miles away, with a firm path round the water.
