The funicular railway climbs from a base station at 660m, beside the Coire Cas car park, to the Ptarmigan building at 1,087m on the shoulder of Cairn Gorm: the highest railway in Britain. It reopened in February 2025 after being out of service since August 2023 for structural remediation work, following an earlier lengthy closure before that. The estate belongs to Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the public body that took it on in 2008, and the railway is operated on its behalf. Given that history, it’s worth checking the operator’s own site before a visit; a mountain funicular in an exposed setting is a maintenance-heavy piece of infrastructure.
At over 1,000m, the Ptarmigan building is the highest public building in the UK, and holds a restaurant and exhibition space with views across the summit plateau and down into Strathspey. Access from the top station out onto the open hillside is restricted to people engaged in snow sports or on a guided walk, a rule brought in to protect the fragile montane plant life on the plateau. A standard ticket buys the building and the view from it, not a walk onto the mountain itself.
The ride takes a few minutes each way, and the railway runs daily year-round, weather permitting, busiest through the ski season. It remains one of the only ways in Scotland to reach over 1,000m of elevation without walking a step, which makes it an option for visitors who can’t manage, or don’t want, the long walk up Cairn Gorm on foot. It suits anyone who wants the Cairngorm plateau in view without the ascent, and a wet day that has already cost you a hill. It does not suit anyone expecting to walk from the top, since a standard ticket does not allow it, nor anyone unwilling to risk a closure. For height without a ticket, the Coire Cas car park at the bottom already sits at 635m and the view down Strathspey from it costs nothing.
