Cairngorm Ski Road and Coire Cas

The unclassified road from Glenmore to the Cairngorm ski centre climbs about 6km and gains over 300m in height, ending at a large car park at Coire Cas, 635m above sea level. It’s among the highest points reached by public road anywhere in Britain, and it does the work of a strenuous half-day walk from the comfort of a car. From the car park, the view opens back down Strathspey towards Aviemore and the Monadhliath hills beyond, and up into the corrie, ringed by the steep ground below Cairn Gorm’s summit and the Northern Corries.

Because the car park is also the funicular railway’s base station, the view is available to anyone regardless of fitness or mobility: it’s tarmac underfoot, with no walking needed beyond the car park itself. In winter it’s also the access point for Scotland’s biggest ski area, and the road is gritted and kept open as a priority route, though it can still close in the worst weather. The whole estate, road and car park included, is owned by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and sits inside the Cairngorms National Park.

This isn’t a wilderness experience. The car park, day lodge and ski infrastructure are all visible from the viewpoint, and on a busy weekend it can feel more like a resort than a mountainside. What it delivers reliably, and without any walking at all, is height: at 635m you’re already higher than the summit of most hills in England and Wales, with the high ground of the Cairngorm plateau rising directly above. It suits anyone who wants mountain scale for the price of a drive, and anyone travelling with somebody who cannot walk to get it. Wildness is not on offer, and nobody should come expecting it: a day lodge and a ski tow are in every direction you look. For the same forest and the same hills with a walk in them, Loch an Eilein is five level kilometres of path twenty minutes back down the road.
