Sea Kayaking from Portree

North Skye Outdoors, based near Uig and operating under the long-established Whitewave name, runs guided sea kayaking on the coast around northern Skye, from short taster sessions to full-day trips. Weekly taster sessions launch from Skye Sailing Club in Portree harbour, a short walk from the town centre, while the longer half-day and full-day sessions meet at a location confirmed nearer the time, depending on wind and sea conditions, usually somewhere around Portree or Uig.

No experience is needed for the standard sessions: instruction and equipment are provided, and groups are matched to a stretch of coast that suits the conditions on the day and the ability of the group. A half-day session runs to about three hours including setup, with roughly ninety minutes to two hours actually on the water; a full day runs from around 9am to 4pm. Both give a view of Skye’s coastline, sea caves and, with some luck, wildlife such as seals and porpoises, that isn’t available from any road or path.

Access to the water is a right rather than a permission: the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, which NatureScot maintains, cover inland and coastal water alike. This suits anyone reasonably fit and comfortable in a boat, but it depends entirely on weather and sea state: a booking can be moved or cancelled at short notice if conditions turn, which is worth planning around rather than treating as a fixed commitment on a single-centre trip.
