Sea Kayaking from Portree

North Skye Outdoors runs guided sea kayaking from the Trotternish peninsula, around Portree and Uig, from short taster sessions to full-day trips. Friday and Saturday taster sessions of 1.5 hours launch from Skye Sailing Club in Portree harbour, a short walk from the town centre, while the longer half-day and full-day sessions meet at a location confirmed nearer the time, depending on wind and sea conditions, usually somewhere around Portree or Uig.

The general session is open to everyone aged 14 and over and a family session covers children aged 6 to 13, with a wetsuit for single kayaks, a paddling jacket, drybag and safety equipment provided. A half-day session puts 1.5 to 2 hours on the water, a full day is longer, and the operator publishes the session times. Both give a view of Skye’s coastline, sea caves and, with some luck, wildlife such as seals and porpoises, that is not available from any road or path.

A private session for up to six people is also offered. The operator confirms the meeting place a day or two beforehand, when the forecast is more reliable, so the trip depends on weather and sea state and is worth planning around rather than treating as a fixed commitment on a single-centre trip. The sessions suit anyone fit and comfortable in a boat, and do not suit someone uneasy on open water or a visitor with one free day and no room to move it.
