Climbing on Stanage Edge

Stanage Edge has trained more British climbers than any other single crag, a three-mile wall of Millstone Grit running north from the Cowper Stone above Hathersage. It holds the longest recorded rock route in the country, Ron Fawcett’s 5,000-metre Girdle Traverse, completed in 1992, but the edge is equally known for short, steep single pitches within easy reach of the path, which is what makes it a training ground rather than just a destination for experts.

Access is open and free: this is not a commercial venue, and there is no booking or entry fee, just a choice of car parks (Hollin Bank, Dennis Knoll or North Lees) below the rock and a short walk up to the base of the routes. Grades run from easy, well-protected lines to some of the hardest gritstone climbing anywhere, so it suits complete beginners climbing with an experienced partner or instructor just as well as it suits people chasing a hard new route.

Ring ouzels nest on parts of the edge in spring, and where an active nest sits close to a popular route, the British Mountaineering Council works with local access groups to post on-site signage asking climbers to avoid that specific line until the birds have fledged. These restrictions are narrow and temporary rather than a closure of the crag, but it is worth checking current signage on arrival.
