Torridon is a scatter of houses and cottages along the shore at the head of Upper Loch Torridon, with Beinn Alligin, Liathach and Beinn Eighe rising to around 1,000m from sea level behind it, as Undiscovered Scotland describes the view. The village was called Fasag until the 1950s, and Undiscovered Scotland lists a general store, a village hall, a campsite and a youth hostel; The Torridon hotel is at nearby Annat, according to Wikipedia. The land to the north of the glen has belonged to the National Trust for Scotland since 1967, and on 6 August 2026 NatureScot announced Torridon as a National Nature Reserve of about 5,100 hectares covering Beinn Alligin and Liathach, with the Trust as custodian.

Why base here

No other base on this site sits this close to serious mountain ground. Liathach starts about three kilometres east of the village along the A896, measured between Walkhighlands’ grid references, and the waymarked Beinn Eighe Mountain Trail is a drive away on Loch Maree. Both are serious: the first is a ridge with exposed scrambling, the second a very steep climb on a built path. Torridon is a base for people who came to climb, and this site lists nothing gentle that starts from the village door beyond the walk below.

On foot versus by car

Walkhighlands’ Torridon village walk starts at the Countryside Centre, runs 6.1km in about two hours with 32m of ascent, and takes in a deer museum, a wildlife hide, the shore and the open-air church at Am Ploc. That is the one outing from the village itself.

The Liathach path is a drive or a long road walk, and Walkhighlands lists no public transport to its start. The Beinn Eighe trail needs a car along the A896 to Kinlochewe and then the A832 beside Loch Maree. Walkhighlands also describes a twelve-kilometre walk behind Liathach, from a car park on the A896, that crosses the hills on a clear path in three and a half to five hours; there is no transport between its two ends.

Practicalities

Public transport is thin. Walkhighlands describes a minibus from Lochcarron that must be booked in advance, and Visit Torridon suggests a train to Strathcarron and a bus from there. NatureScot places Achnasheen station 15km from Kinlochewe. Visit Torridon states that there is no petrol station, bank or cash machine in the village: the nearest fuel is at Kinlochewe, Lochcarron and Gairloch. Fill the tank before you arrive.

Getting here and parking

The National Trust for Scotland's Torridon Countryside Centre has a parking area at the foot of the village road, and small parking areas serve the path to Liathach on the A896.

The minor road through Torridon village leaves the A896, which runs west from Kinlochewe through Glen Torridon. There is no petrol station in Torridon itself.
