Stanley Ghyll Force from Eskdale

Stanley Ghyll Force sits in a narrow, wooded ravine a short distance from Boot, reached along the same path used for Eskdale’s riverside walk before it splits off through a gate into Stanley Gill Woods. The going is rougher than the short overall distance suggests: the track follows the beck upstream, crossing it three times on wooden footbridges, through increasingly steep-sided woodland.

The ravine is National Park access land and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, notified for the mosses, lichens, liverworts and rare ferns that the constant spray keeps alive. The reward is one of the least-visited waterfalls in the Lake District, a narrow ravine where the beck drops in stages between mossy rock walls. Reaching a clear view of the falls means a final scramble up the bank rather than a level path to a viewing platform, which keeps casual visitor numbers well below places like Aira Force even though the walk itself is barely two miles there and back.

This route is not circular. Walkers return the same way they came, back down the ravine to Trough House Bridge or the Dalegarth car park. The combination of a rough track, footbridges and a scramble at the end makes this an easy walk to underestimate: it does not suit pushchairs, and it is worth taking care with very young children on the final approach to the falls, even though nothing here requires fell-walking experience.

For anyone based in Eskdale wanting a short outing between the valley’s two fells, Harter Fell and Illgill Head, this is the obvious low-effort choice, so long as sturdy footwear replaces any expectation of an easy, level path.
