Nevis Range Mountain Gondola

Nevis Range calls its gondola the UK’s only mountain gondola, and it carries riders up Aonach Mòr to a top station at 650 metres, where the Snowgoose cafe, a viewing balcony and two viewpoint walks, Sgurr Finnisg-aig and Meall Beag, wait. The ride gives a wide view, on a clear day, over Fort William, Loch Linnhe and Ben Nevis itself, seen here from the north-east, across the Allt a’ Mhuilinn glen, rather than from Glen Nevis.

In the bike season the same gondola serves mountain bikers heading for the Nevis Range trails, which include the World Cup Track; the resort has hosted the Mountain Bike World Cup and the World Championships in 2007 and 2023. Bike uplift is seasonal and runs on fewer days than the gondola. Walkers can also use the gondola simply to reach the top station and the shorter paths around it, without any onward biking or serious hillwalking.

Aonach Mòr is the neighbour of Ben Nevis rather than the mountain itself. The gondola runs weather permitting, and the operator publishes its own hours, which shift with daylight and the season; a morning check of its mountain report is the sensible habit, because wind closes it at short notice. The resort also closes for maintenance and posts the dates itself. Tickets vary by activity, so the operator’s price page is the place to read them. It suits families and less mobile visitors as well as it suits mountain bikers, since the ride itself asks nothing of anyone beyond sitting in a cabin for a quarter of an hour. Anyone hoping to reach Ben Nevis this way will not manage it, because the gondola does not go there, and it is the wrong choice for anyone whose day cannot absorb a wind closure. For a guaranteed Glen Nevis outing on foot, Steall Falls is under two hours there and back.
