Betws-y-Coed is the single base in Eryri where a car is optional. The village sits on the Conwy Valley Line, with the station a short walk from every guesthouse in the centre, and the same line continues on to Blaenau Ffestiniog, putting an underground adventure park within reach without a road journey at either end. Add the forest walk to Llyn Elsi, which starts from the streets themselves, and a waterfall a short bus ride up the A5, and three days fill easily without ever needing a rental car or a lift.
Who this suits
Families without a second driver, visitors travelling up by train from Chester or Manchester, and anyone who would rather spend a short break on a handful of unhurried outings than a list of summits. The walk to Llyn Elsi has a climb in it, several hundred feet of it, but nothing technical, and dogs are welcome there on a lead; the underground trampoline park obviously isn’t a dog day, and Swallow Falls’ steps make it a case-by-case call rather than a guarantee.
What it does not cover
This is not a mountain itinerary. The classic days around Snowdon, the Glyderau and the Carneddau all sit ten to fifteen minutes further on by road, and none of them are realistically reachable without one. Betws-y-Coed works as a base for exactly what is listed here, a forest lake, a slate cavern and a waterfall, plus a village with cafes and an outdoor shop for the wet afternoons in between. Anyone who wants Yr Wyddfa itself, or a day on open mountain, should base in Llanberis or Beddgelert instead and treat this as a different kind of trip rather than a lesser version of the same one.

Day 1
Settle in and climb to Llyn Elsi
Betws-y-Coed is the only village in this guide with its own station on the Conwy Valley Line, so the first afternoon needs nothing more than the walk out from behind St Mary's Church. The path climbs steeply through Gwydir Forest for the first stretch, then eases onto forestry track before circling the lake. Dogs are welcome on a lead throughout, and there are benches by the dam for the view back towards the Carneddau.

Day 2
Underground by train to Blaenau Ffestiniog
The same railway line continues on to Blaenau Ffestiniog, so today's trip needs a train ticket rather than a car key. Zip World's Bounce Below strings trampoline netting through a slate cavern twice the size of St Paul's, held at a constant six to eight degrees regardless of what the weather is doing outside. It suits children too young for the faster zip lines elsewhere in the region, and it runs all year except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Day 3
Swallow Falls, a couple of miles out
Swallow Falls sits a couple of miles west along the A5, close enough for the local bus rather than a walk. The water drops through a series of cascades rather than one clean fall, much as George Borrow described it in 1862, and a short paid path reaches the main viewing platform (the lower platforms involve steps, so this isn't a fully step-free visit). It rounds off a trip built entirely around the village's one advantage, never needing to find anywhere to park.
